While natural antioxidants have consistently demonstrated beneficial metabolic effects, not much is known about the long-term metabolic consequences of synthetic antioxidants used in food processing. Among these, tertiary butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) is widely incorporated into edible oils to prevent lipid oxidation and prolong shelf life.
